There are several ways to add symbols to your diagram.

There are two Create buttons on the Diagram Tool Bar. There is a Create button to add symbols horizontally and vertically and there is a Create button to add symbols diagonally. The Create buttons create a linked symbol in the direction of the arrow you select.
